7 Days Machame Route

The ‘Whiskey’ route is the most scenic path up Kilimanjaro, known for its diverse landscapes and excellent acclimatization profile.

Route Overview

The Machame Route, affectionately known as the ‘Whiskey’ route for its challenging nature compared to the ‘Coca-Cola’ Marangu, is considered the most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the southwest and offers trekkers an incredible variety of landscapes, from lush rainforest to alpine desert. The route’s ‘climb high, sleep low’ profile provides excellent acclimatization, resulting in higher summit success rates.

Day 1 - Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Begin at Machame Gate and trek through pristine montane rainforest. The trail is often muddy but teeming with life—look for blue monkeys, colorful birds, and unique flora.

Day 2 - Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Ascend through the heather and moorland zone with increasingly panoramic views. The Shira Plateau opens up before you, an ancient volcanic caldera at the base of Kibo.

Day 3 - Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Trek to Lava Tower at 4,630m for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. This ‘climb high, sleep low’ strategy significantly improves summit success.

Day 4 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Scale the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting scramble with rewarding views. Cross several valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.

Day 5 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Continue ascending through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the launch point for your summit attempt. Rest and prepare for the midnight departure.

Day 6 - Summit Night to Uhuru Peak

Depart around midnight for the summit push. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim as the sun rises, then continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp after celebrating your achievement.

Day 7 - Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your well-earned summit certificate before transfer to Arusha.
