Route Overview

The Umbwe Route is the most challenging and direct path to Kilimanjaro’s summit. This steep, demanding route is recommended only for experienced, physically fit trekkers who are confident in high-altitude environments. The reward for this challenge is an uncrowded, authentic wilderness experience through pristine forest and dramatic ridgelines. The route offers incredible views and joins the Machame Route at Barranco before the summit push.

Day 1 - Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Begin at Umbwe Gate and immediately enter dense, atmospheric rainforest. The steep, root-laden trail climbs through moss-draped trees to Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2 - Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp

Continue climbing steeply through the forest and into the heath zone. The ridge walk offers dramatic views before reaching Barranco Camp.

Day 3 - Barranco to Karanga Camp

Climb the famous Barranco Wall and traverse valleys to reach Karanga Camp. Take time to acclimatize.

Day 4 - Karanga to Barafu Camp

Short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp in the alpine desert. Rest and prepare for the summit push.

Day 5 - Summit Night to Uhuru Peak

Midnight departure for the summit. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 6 - Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to Arusha.
