6 Days Marangu Route

Known as the ‘Coca-Cola’ route, Marangu is the only route offering sleeping huts and is one of the most popular paths to the summit.

Route Overview

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the ‘Coca-Cola’ route due to its popularity, it’s the only path offering mountain hut accommodations instead of camping. This makes it an excellent choice for climbers who prefer the comfort of sleeping in beds. The route approaches from the southeast and is known for its gradual ascent, though it has a slightly lower success rate due to the shorter acclimatization time.

Day 1 - Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, trek through lush montane rainforest rich with wildlife including colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The well-maintained path gradually ascends through ancient trees draped with moss.

Day 2 - Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone with giant heathers and lobelias. The landscape opens up with stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks on clear days.

Day 3 - Acclimatization Day at Horombo

A crucial rest day for acclimatization. Optional hike to Zebra Rocks at 4,000m offers great views and helps your body adjust to the altitude before the summit push.

Day 4 - Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Cross the alpine desert, a stark lunar landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain becomes increasingly barren as you approach Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt.

Day 5 - Summit Night to Uhuru Peak

Begin the summit push around midnight, climbing scree slopes to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Continue along the crater to Stella Point and finally to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Descend to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 6 - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Final descent through moorland and rainforest zones. Receive your summit certificate at the gate before transfer back to Arusha.
